Mechanics of a Backstage

The backstage may be defined as a place ... where the impression fostered by a given performance is knowingly contradicted as a matter of course: Specific aspects of the activity are accentuated in the front region in order to make a certain impression on the spectators while other aspects 'which might discredit the fostered impression, are suppressed.' The backstage is the region where these suppressed aspects resurface and they must therefore be concealed from the performance spectators. Here the performance is rehearsed, the necessary arrangements and adjustments are made, and the 'dirty laundry' is hidden to be washed away afterwards.
