BA Fine Art & History of Art Degree Show 2009

Goldsmiths College, London, UK

June 2009

The 26 new works in the BA (hons) Fine Art & History of Art Degree Show 2009 is a vast array of work from students working in many different disciplines.

Goldsmiths' BA (hons) in Fine Art & History of Art is a joint degree, which is split equally between studio practice and art theory. The meeting between the two disciplines is encouraging new modes of perception and creation whilst demanding a strong critical standpoint from the student. The degree encourages a highly critical art practice to challenge accepted art historical ideas, whilst being careful to avoid imposing an artificial relationship between theory and practice. The course expects an awareness of the development of visual culture and its influence upon a student's chosen medium.

The relationship between the two disciplines remains subterranean - it is a relationship which happens at all times but remains hidden. The challenge of this interdisciplinary approach is constant, but extremely rewarding as it proposes an opening for new understandings between fine art and art theory, creating flexible artists and a third, new practice in the process.

The BA (hons) Fine Art & History of Art Degree Show 2009 is part of Goldsmiths Department of Art – 2009 Shows at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
