New exhibition at the Demo Room Galleri Image, Aarhus, DK

Press release from The Demo Room, Galleri Image:

New exhibition opening with Danish artist Marie Thams at the Demo Room Galleri Image, Aarhus

We are proud to present Danish artist Marie Thams’ exhibition frivillig handling at the Demo Room at Galleri Image Friday, August 2, 2013 to August 25, 2013.

Danish artist Marie Thams‘ (b. 1982) exhibition frivillig handling explores an artistic notion that demonstrates a different kind of attentiveness; a different social significance.

Camouflaging the entire exhibition space with the distinct words “frivillig handling” (voluntary act) clearly exemplifies the critical standpoint from which the art of Marie Thams can be perceived.

Using the typography Helvetica to form meaning, is a conscious choice in this work. And the critically focused approach that promotes an awareness of particular ideas, which makes use of existing cultural codex in order to transfigure the idea of the art world market, is further challenged.

This is also the goal of Marie Thams: to propose a subversion of the norms and that way to question the meaning of creating. In other words it creates awareness of what Rosalind Krauss has dubbed the 'post-medium condition that promises to provide a critical standpoint from which the art of the present might be perceived'.

Curated by Cecilie Bepler.

”Dear Sir Bartleby
… You say you would prefer not to perform the tasks your employer asks you to carry out. Why? That I am not certain of, but one thing seems clear – precisely that you will not. It is this act of refusal and the questions it brings with it, which makes me write to you, Sir. Out of your negation emerges a question of potentiality to me, which is something I will attempt to unfold in this letter. …”
Excerpt from ‘Letter to Bartleby’ written by the artist.

At Holodeck Marie Thams shows the video installation No, and other possibilities. The work is an artistic investigation dealing with human potentiality in creative fields. By breaking with the expected and focusing on the possibility of Not using our potential and to Stop doing something Thams raises an urgent question in a time and field for endless possibilities and demands for productivity.

Lehman Brothers Cooperate Discourse

14 Mar 2013

Newly started reading group/platform

Lehman Brothers Cooperate Discourse is an exhibition platform working with conversation and discussion as part of creating a frame work for artistic pracsis. We, Morten Espersen, Kim Kilde and Marie Thams, with participation from Simen Helsvig, Heidi Hove and Morten Jakobsen, will be starting the group as a reading group with the goal to create a platform for discussion, seminars and exhibitions. We are starting of with Jean-Luc Nancy's writing.

For more information on the group's development (for now in Danish) visit: lehmanbros.net
